Some of the biggest names in world football attended an exclusive 'House Party' as BT Sport celebrates the arrival of the Champions League and Europa League.
BT Sport has launched an advertising campaign featuring some of the biggest names in world football to celebrate becoming the new home of the Champions League and Europa League.
A total of 13 Champions League winners, boasting 16 trophies between them, appear in the BT Sport ‘House Party’, which you can watch now by simply opening the player above.
Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale, PSG defender David Luiz, ex-Chelsea star Didier Drogba, Man City keeper Joe Hart, Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Bayern Munich trio Franck Ribery, Thiago Alcântara and Philipp Lahm are among the stars getting into the party spirit.
Also enjoying the festivities are BT Sport pundits and presenters Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Owen, Steve McManaman, Owen Hargreaves, Robbie Savage, Jake Humphrey, James Richardson and Lynsey Hipgrave.
The campaign showcases the incredible value of the BT Sport package, which gives BT TV customers free access to all 351 Champions League and Europa League games next season.
This comes hot on the heels of last week’s Ultra HD launch, when BT released details of its Ultra HD TV package.
How do I sign up for BT Sport?
BT TV customers can receive the full BT Sport Pack for free – comprising BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2, ESPN on BT Sport and the brand new BT Sport Europe channel, which launches on August 1.
BT Broadband customers who choose to watch on their Sky service, via the BT Sport App or on BT Mobile, will be able to add the BT Sport Pack for a small charge of £5 a month.
For more information on how to become a BT Sport customer, visit bt.com/europe.
Why watch the Champions League on BT Sport?
BT Sport Europe is the only place you can watch UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League live - you can no longer watch any of these matches on ITV or Sky Sports.
However, BT will also make some matches available for everyone to watch, whether a subscriber or not, via a new, free-to-air channel on digital TV.
Called BT Sport Showcase, this channel will show a minimum of 12 UEFA Champions League matches and 14 UEFA Europa League matches and these will be available to anyone to watch for free. Each participating British team will be shown at least once.
What new features are there?
A stellar line-up of presenters and pundits – boosted by recent signings such as Lineker and Gerrard - will help to deliver the optimal coverage of the world’s two greatest continental club competitions.
A Connected Red Button service will allow BT TV viewers to switch between matches and track the action with a new ‘Goal Alert’ function which will let the viewer know when a goal is scored in any of the games and check the latest stats.
Every game will be broadcast live on BTSport.com and on the BT Sport App. The app will include a new game timeline feature, allowing fans to view goals and events from any game, at any time.
Fans will also be able to watch key events from multiple camera angles and enjoy a wealth of in-game analysis through new tournament and match pages.
What is Ultra HD?
BT has announced that in August it will also launch the first Ultra HD (4K) channel in Europe, BT Sport Ultra HD, and will also introduce a new BT TV Ultra HD set top box.
Ultra HD offers stunning picture quality with four times the detail of HD and will be the star of BT’s top TV package, Entertainment Ultra HD.
The Community Shield between Arsenal and Chelsea on August 2 will be the first broadcast, with other live events shown throughout the season, including selected games from the Champions League, Barclays Premier League, FA Cup and Aviva Premiership Rugby.

Di Maria set for PSG move

Charlotte - The stage appeared to be set Sunday for Manchester United midfielder Angel Di Maria to join Paris Saint Germain after spending just the one season at Old Trafford.
The future of unsettled Argentine star was thrown into further doubt after it emerged that he had failed to join up with the club's US tour as scheduled in California.
United manager Louis van Gaal told reporters after his side's 3-1 friendly victory over Barcelona that Di Maria had failed to board a flight to San Francisco.
"I have heard that he's not on the plane so I cannot say anything," Van Gaal said. "I have heard that he was not on the plane," he reiterated.
Di Maria had been excused from the first part of United's tour after playing in the Copa America.
Shortly afterwards, PSG manager Laurent Blanc said in Charlotte, North Carolina where the French champions lost on penalties to Chelsea, that transfer talks were well underway.
"It's a very long, drawn-out affair," Blanc said. "Two big clubs are having talks. Let's just wait for the moment and we will see the outcome very shortly.
"For the moment, he (Di Maria) is down to play for Manchester against PSG on Wednesday. For the moment, that is. I repeat that rumour has it that this player has every possibility to join Paris Saint Germain, but ... at this moment in time nothing is official."
Di Maria joined United last year in a 59.7 million pound ($92.6 million) British record transfer from Real Madrid but has failed to settle during a difficult first season with the Premier League giants.
L'Equipe newspaper on Sunday reported that a deal to bring Di Maria to Paris was imminent and that the transfer fee would be around 63million euros ($69million, 45million) .
"There are some details that still need to be worked out between the club and the player, but there is every chance that he will join up with his future teammates in New Jersey in the coming days or even hours," the paper said.
Di Maria would be PSG's big transfer move of the summer as they look to convert their domination of the domestic scene in France onto the European stage with a first-ever victory in the Champions League.
Since the Qatar Sports Investments took over the running and financing of the club four years ago, a top player has been added to the squad each summer - Javier Pastore (43million euros) in 2011, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva (more than 60million euros) in 2012, Edinson Cavani (64million euros) in 2013 and David Luiz (50 million euros) in 2014.)
Di Maria would be the latest addition to the glittering array of international talent on show at the Parc des Princes.

Paris Saint-Germain vs. Chelsea, Preseason fakery: Preview; How to watch

The real thing starts in two weeks.  Until then, here's more fakery.
The International Champions Cup visual effects will be beamed directly into your eyeballs and earballs from Charlotte, NC this time around.  I once sat on the tarmac of Charlotte international airport for two hours, waiting for a thunderstorm to pass.  And since I was stuck inside an airplane, it was not very much fun at all.  I hate you, Charlotte.
Our opponents will be once harmless Paris Saint-Germain.  Recently, they've become far more annoying, but since they're not the 16-year-old honey badgers hopped up on testosterone and Red Bull of New York Red Bulls II, we might even have a chance of winning.
If you care, that is.  It's all fake anyway.  The cake is a lie.
Date / Time: Saturday, July 25, 2015, 23:00 BST; 6pm EDT; 3:30am IST (next day)
Venue: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC, USA
Forecast: Normal for the year, i.e. HOT!  Dropping towards comfortable as the night wears on, with relatively low humidity.
On TV: Sky Sports 1 (UK); Fox Sports 2, ESPN Deportes (USA); Star Sports 4 / HD 4 (India)
Online: Sky Go, Chelsea TV (UK); Fox Soccer 2Go, Watch ESPN (USA)
PSG Team News: This will be PSG's fourth preparatory match already, so they're perhaps a touch ahead of where we are in terms of match fitness and general season readiness.  Though many of their South American starts only joined up recently after extended vacations.  For David Luiz, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, and Edinson Cavani, the Chelsea match will be their first involvement of the preseason.
Ex-Spurs spare part Benjamin Stambouli and backup goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (formerly of Eintracht Frankfurt) are the two new faces in the squad, while the one significant loss since we last them has been Yohan Cabaye, who's gone back to England to reunite with Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace (and supply many assists, hopefully, for our boy Patrick Bamford).
Manager Laurent Blanc called this matchup a "nice twist of fate" and said he expects a nice open, entertaining game.  You hear that, David Luiz?  Be nice!  Good boy.
Chelsea Team News: Mourinho stressed that all he cares about is that we play better than in the second half against New York Red Bulls, and that it matters not that we're facing PSG again so soon after that debacle of a draw at Stamford Bridge in March.  Most of the players echoed these sentiments.  True revenge cannot be gained in a fake/friendly match anyway.
Just like PSG, our Copa America reinforcements have arrived, minus one Filipe Luiswho apparently got on the wrong flight and ended up back in Madrid instead.  Oops.  Old habits and such.  But, Falcao, Juan Cuadrado, and most importantly, Willian are all here now, and ready to get to work.
Previously: Three years ago, we met PSG in a friendly in the USA.  The managers wereRoberto Di Matteo and Carlo Ancelotti.  David Luiz played for the good guys.  Our starting lineup included Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne.  Sometimes, things can change very quickly in football.  We drew 1-1 that day; that scoreline may not be all the different from tonight's encounter.

PSG vs. Chelsea, Preseason fakery: Confirmed lineups

PSG starting lineup (4-3-3):
Kevin Trapp | Maxwell, David Luiz, Serge Aurier, Gregory van der Wiel | Marco Verratti, Benjamin Stambouli, Blaise Matuidi | Lucas Moura, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Jean-Kevin Augustin
Substitutes from: Salvatore Sirigu, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Thiago Motta, Edinson Cavani, Jean-Christophe Bahebeck, Lucas Digne, Adrien Rabiot, Youssouf Sabaly, Christopher Nkunku, Presnel Kimpembe, Hervin Ogenda, Mike Maignan
Chelsea starting lineup (4-2-3-1):
Asmir Begovic | Cesar Azpilicueta, John Terry, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic | Nemanja Matic, John Obi Mikel | Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas, Victor Moses | Diego Costa
Substitutes from: Thibaut Courtois, Kurt Zouma, Ramires, Oscar, Falcao, Juan Cuadrado, Bertrand Traoré, Loïc Rémy, Willian, Nathaniel Chalobah, Ola Aina, Dominic Solanke, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Jake Clarke-Salter
---
Mourinho starts with the first-choice back four, plus Matic and Hazard and Costa in all their usual spots.  Begovic looks for a bit of redemption, while Moses will hopefully continue his impressive start to preseason.
PSG have one recognized center back in the lineup and even that is just David Luiz.  Let there be goals!

David Luiz says he’s open to a future in MLS, praises growth of soccer in United States

CHARLOTTE — Ahead of the International Champions Cup friendly between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, former Blues defender David Luiz took some time to discuss his experience playing in the United States so far.
Luiz
With news of PSG teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s desire to play in Major League Soccer at the end of his European career, Luiz echoed Ibrahimovic’s positive sentiments about the growth of soccer in the United States, predicting that a host of top European players will likely be making their way to the U.S. in the near future, including possibly even him.
“You can see MLS is growing up a lot,” Luiz told ProSoccerTalk. “The next five, ten years here [the United States] will be the future for many many players. [Zlatan] is older than me, so he can speak more about it than me, but it is a pleasure to be here. I think the American people know how to make a show, and they start to love soccer now as they love baseball, basketball, and American football.”
He said those positive feelings have had an impact on him and his teammates, and that those good vibes about the game in the States are swaying his thoughts about his future.
“It’s always very nice to be here,” Luiz said. “The atmosphere here, whether it’s a friendly match or a tournament is very, very nice. Like I said, it can be the future for many, many players, so why not for me? The quality of life here for families and for everybody is very nice.”
He did offer one suggestion for the growth of soccer in the United States, one that is hardly surprising coming from a player who has been immersed all his life in traditional soccer powerhouses.
“The passion can come when you have one organization,” Luiz said. “You need to have a competition for the first league, for the second league. Now you don’t have that, the teams that play in the first division play in the first division, so I think you need to have this to grow up.”
In other words, he supports promotion/relegation.
Luiz also pointed towards the academies as a place that could continue to grow to get youth players flowing through on a regular basis, but agreed the national team is on a level that forces top opponents to take it seriously. “They are preparing themselves for that [a jump to the top level],” Luiz said. “They have proven that the last few years. They have a great coach, he knows about football so that’s why they improve a lot, and I think it is about the passion about soccer in this country now. Everybody is starting to love soccer as they love different sports, so that’s why it’s going up.”
The 28-year-old Brazilian has always been one of the most accessible players in Europe for fans, and that was no different in Charlotte. From the moment he stepped off the bus, he was the only PSG player who spent more than a moment signing autographs for awaiting fans. Up in the hotel he was approached by a kid from Indianapolis whose parents drove all night to get him to the game, and the boy hoped to get Luiz’s autograph for his 10th birthday. He ended up with an autograph, a picture, and a 5-minute conversation with the defender that left the child beaming from ear to ear.
“I love to say thank you, because without them [the fans] we are nothing,” Luiz said wholeheartedly. “I need to have these kind of moments with kids, we need to be available for them – first of all I love it, but also they [the fans] deserve it. Not too many players like to do this kind of thing, but lots of players love to play in front of a full stadium, so you need to be intelligent, because they go hand in hand.”

Is David Luiz overrated?

We have all heard the name David Luiz before and that name is usually followed up with ‘the most expensive defender’. But is this defender as good as people claim?
Throwback to Brazil verse Colombia in the 2014 World Cup quarter-finals. Thiago Silva scores in the seventh minute. Thiago Silva then receives a yellow card in the 64th minute meaning Thiago Silva is forced to miss out on the next game.
In the 69th minute we see David Luiz score an astounding 35-yard free kick and we see Brazil progress to the semi-final, albeit without two very key players (Neymar and Thiago Silva).
Semi-final, Brazil v Germany. We all know what happened in this fixture.
We see the first goal from Germany occurred due to a lack of overall defending from Brazil. Yet in the second goal from Thomas Müller, if you watch David Luiz closely he is literally ball watching. Marcelo the left fullback is in a better defensive position than David Luiz himself.
For Toni Kroos’ second goal, you must ask, where is David Luiz? He is a centre-back therefore why is he playing so distant to his partnering centre-back Dante? Once the Brazilians lose the ball David Luiz shows no urgency to get back and help.
By the fifth goal, Luiz’s positioning is just an absolute disgrace. It was a three-on-three scenario in which the Brazilian’s centre-back is absent. He is in a position where the centre attacking midfielder should be during this goal.
Goal number six we seen David Luiz again ball watching and for goal number seven the so-called Brazilian superstar completely loses track of Andre Schürrle.
Overall, quite a horrible performance from David Luiz, which leads me to suspect and question how good the former Chelsea player is.
Many can argue that the loss of Neymar led to the 7-1 loss but I find that interesting since Neymar is not a defensive player. None of his actions would have been able to stop any of Germany’s goals you would expect.
I believe the absence of Thiago Silva created a bigger problem for Brazil. As we know, both David Luiz and Thiago Silva have played together since they were children and they currently play together for French giants Paris Saint-Germain as the two first choice centre-back paring.
They are so dynamic together because of their history together. In this World Cup game against Germany, we saw David Luiz constantly out of position and being caught way too high up the pitch.
To me it seems Thiago Silva is almost a part of how well David Luiz plays in the centre-back position. If Brazil had played Dante and Miranda as the two center-backs and played David Luiz in the midfield then this game could have had a very different outcome.

Club career[edit]

Vitória[edit]

Born in Diadema, São Paulo to Ladislao and Regina Marinho, David Luiz arrived in Esporte Clube Vitória after being released by São Paulo FC,[8] and started playing as a defensive midfielder, almost leaving the club for his poor performances in that position.[9] However, he was soon moved to central defender and adapted well.[10]
David Luiz made his official debut for Vitória in 2006, excelling in a 2–2 draw against Santa Cruz Futebol Clube for that season's Brazilian Cup.[10] At the worst situation of its history, in the third division, the club eventually promoted to the second level after finishing in second position, with the player appearing in eight of the club's last decisive nine games,[11] scoring his only league goal on 3 September 2006 in a 2–0 home win against Clube Atlético do Porto.[12]

Benfica[edit]

On 30 January 2007, David Luiz joined Sport Lisboa e Benfica as a replacement for Tottenham Hotspur-bound Ricardo Rocha, on loan.[13] He made a somewhat tumultuous debut for the club in a UEFA Cup match against Paris Saint-Germain F.C. at theParc des Princes, partnering compatriot Anderson in the center of the defense, replacing the injured Luisão. Benfica lost the match 2–1, but managed to go through to the next round after winning 4–3 on aggregate.
On 12 March 2007, he played his first league match for Benfica, against União de Leiria,[14] At the end of the season, Luiz signed a five-year deal with the club[15] and at the end of the season, following 10 league appearances, joined permanently for €1.5 million.[16] Before the ensuing campaign, he scored his first goal for the club in the Torneio do Guadiana friendly tournament, against Sporting Clube de Portugal. David Luiz only managed eight appearances in the league due to injury, however, as Benfica finished fourth.
On 11 January 2009, David Luiz netted his first official goal for Benfica, the game's only in a home success against Sporting de Braga. He played most of the campaign as a left-back, at the expense of Portuguese international Jorge Ribeiro.
However, it was on the 2009–10 season, when new manager Jorge Jesus arrived to Benfica, that David Luiz became a club symbol and vice-captain. He was everpresent, appearing in 49 official matches (three goals, 4,206 minutes), as Benfica won the league after a five-year wait. In the season's League Cup, in a 4–1 away win against Sporting, he opened the score in the eighth minute, with Benfica also eventually winning the competition. David Luiz won the Portuguese Liga Player of the Year that same season, with 38% of the vote while the runner-up, his teammate Ángel Di María, received 8%.[16]
On 30 September 2009, Benfica sold 25% of David Luiz's economic rights on any future transfer to a third-party ownerBenfica Stars Fund, along with other teammates. He was tagged at €18 million, with the fund paying €4.5 million;[17] his contract was also renewed in October, with a release clause of €50 million.[18]

Chelsea[edit]

On 30 January 2011, David Luiz completed a move to Chelsea for a fee of €25 million, a five-and-a-half-year contract, with Nemanja Matić joining Benfica at the end of the season after his transfer spell away at Vitesse in the Netherlands.[19][20][21][22] He made his official Premier League debut on 6 February, replacing José Bosingwa in a 1–0 home loss against Liverpool.[23] Eight days later, he made his first start for Chelsea, in a 0–0 draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage. Instantly becoming a cult hero amongst the Chelsea fans, David Luiz was awarded the Barclays Man of the Match award for his performance, despite giving away a penalty in the 93rd minute of the game, which was saved by Petr Čech.[24]
David Luiz with a T-shirt saying "Deus é fiel" ("God is faithful") after winning the Champions League.
On 1 March, David Luiz scored his first goal for Chelsea to help the Blues come from behind to win 2–1 against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.[25] On 20 March, he headed in his second goal for the Blues for a 2–0 home win over Manchester City, and again receiving the Man of the match award, as well as the Player of the Month for March.[26][27]
David Luiz missed the first three games of 2011–12 season due to a knee injury.[28] He made his return to the first team on 13 September in a Champions League group stage match against Bayer Leverkusen, and he scored from 15 yards to break the deadlock in an eventual 2–0 home win.[29] On his second match, a League Cup third round tie against Fulham, he netted hispenalty shoot-out attempt in a 4–3 win (0–0 after 120 minutes).[30]
On 5 February 2012, in a league home fixture against Manchester United, David Luiz put Chelsea ahead 3–0 in the 50th minute after his header was deflected by Rio Ferdinand, following a Juan Mata free kick – the game ended with a 3–3 draw.[31] On the 25th, through a curled shot, he opened the score against Bolton Wanderers (3–0, home).[32]

On 14 March, Chelsea faced Napoli in the Champions League's round-of-16, following a 1–3 loss at theStadio San Paolo: David Luiz made a stunning performance to help his team win the tie with a 4–1 extra-time win, being subsequently chosen by UEFA as the "Man of the match",[33] an accolade he also received in the first leg of the quarterfinals against former team Benfica (1–0 away win). However, after leaving the pitch in the FA Cup semifinals against Tottenham Hotspur with a muscular injury, it was announced that he would miss both of the Champions League semifinals encounters against Barcelona, and the domestic cup final; he played, however, in the Champions League final – John Terry was also suspended for the match – David Luiz appeared, and started for Chelsea, playing the full 120 minutes, along with converting his penalty shootout attempt as the Blues won the shootout 4–3.[34]

On 22 September 2012, David Luiz signed a new five-year contract with Chelsea.[35] He started the new seasonagain as a regular alongside either Gary Cahill or Terry, and scored his first goal from a free-kick against Nordsjælland, in a 4–0 away win for the campaign's Champions League;[36] in the Club World Cup in 2012, in which Chelsea lost in the final to Corinthians, he was chosen the second best player of the tournament, receiving the Silver Ball for his performances, one of which as a defensive midfielder. He played in that position in an 8–0 home thrashing of Aston Villa the following week, being chosen Man of the Match and netting the second from a free-kick.[37][38]
On 17 April 2013, David Luiz scored during a 3–0 victory against London rivals Fulham. He also scored in both legs of the Europa League semi-finals against Basel, the first was a last minute, low free-kick curled around the wall and into the goalkeepers bottom left hand corner to secure a dramatic 2–1 away win, giving Chelsea an advantage going into the second leg at Stamford Bridge.[39][40]
David Luiz was widely criticized for a controversial incident during Chelsea's 1–0 away win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on 5 May. After he elbowed opponent Rafael, the United defender kicked out at him and was sent off. However, David Luiz was seen smiling while lying on the ground before writhing around in mock agony.[41][42][43] David Luiz defended himself, saying he was smiling at the Manchester United fans who could be seen screaming insults and laughing at him.[44]

Paris Saint-Germain[edit]

On 13 June 2014, David Luiz transferred to French club Paris Saint-Germain for a fee of £50 million, a world-record transfer for a defender, signing a five-year contract.[5][6][7] He made his Ligue 1 debut on 16 August, partnering compatriot Marquinhos in central defence as PSG defeated Bastia 2–0 at the Parc des Princes.[45] On 30 September David Luiz scored his first PSG goal, opening a 3–2 home win over Barcelona in the Champions League group stage.[46] He was seen as a surprise inclusion in the FIFA World Team of the Year at the 2014 Ballon d'Or awards.[47]
On 19 January 2015, David Luiz scored his first Ligue 1 goal in a 4–2 defeat of Evian Thonon Gaillard.[48] On 11 March, he scored on his return to Stamford Bridge in the round of 16 of the Champions League as PSG drew 2–2 with his former club Chelsea to knock out the English club on away goals.[49] He apologised for celebrating the goal, saying that it was the result of sudden emotion rather than malice towards his former employers.[50]
In David Luiz's first season at the club, PSG won a domestic treble of the Ligue 1 championship, the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue, in addition to the Trophée des Champions.[51]

International career[edit]

David Luiz playing for Brazil at the Confederations Cup in 2013.
David Luiz played with Brazil's under-20 at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2007, with the team being ousted in the last-16 stage.[52] Courtesy of his solid season at Benfica, he was first picked for the senior side in a 2–0 friendly win against the United States on 10 August 2010, the first match after Mano Menezes had Dunga as the coach of the Seleção. Prior to making his debut for Brazil, the Portuguese Football Federation had considered calling him up to their own national team.[16]
